Here at East Coast Sports, we are passionate about fishing, and we want to help you have the best fishing experience out on the local waters. If you want to catch fish, one thing you will need to do is choose the right bait & tackle to attract them, and in this article, we’ll provide a few tips on how to do just that.
- Know What’s in Season. When choosing bait & tackle, you should check to see which fish species are in season. For example, black fin tuna are active from March through November, but their activity peaks in March/April and again in September/October. Look at what fish are in season at the moment, then choose bait & tackle designed to lure those species to maximize your catch rate.
- Consider Location. Another thing to think about when choosing bait & tackle is whether you plan to fish in saltwater or fresh. Fish in freshwater environments tend to respond best to artificial bait, while those in saltwater environments tend to prefer live bait. However, this is not a hard and fast rule, and we encourage you to consult our experts for further advice.
- Think About Your Target’s Prey. When choosing bait & tackle, you should select options that mimic what your target fish eats. For example, black fin tuna—to return to our earlier example—eat things like sardines, herring, and pilchard, and you will get the best results by using these types of small fish as live bait. Even if you choose artificial bait, do your research and select options that will mimic the types of prey your target is naturally drawn to.
